A good television enhances your entertainment experience. Fortunately, televisions today are built using innovative technology and can offer you a range of advanced features like a 4K HD display, Bluetooth, USB connectivity, Android operating system and Miracast, among others. Based on the features and the model you choose, you can expect the price to vary.

Everyone wants a large TV in their living room. But not everyone can shell out any amount to get the best television in the market. Realising the huge demand in India, several brands have jumped into the LED TV bandwagon to provide affordable alternatives. Brands like Micromax, Intex, Vu, and others have joined ranks to compete with  Samsung, LG and Sony.

So, if you are looking forward to buy an affordable LED TV here are seven things you should look out for.

Seven things to look for when buying a New TV

Decide on the placement and fixtures:

The distance from the viewing area to the TV will give you a good idea of the size of the TV that you need. The size of the room will also help you decide this. Besides, you must also consider whether you will mount the TV on the wall or place it on a shelf or TV unit. Deliberating these factors will help you pick a TV with the right size and installation options.

Remember that TV screen sizes are measured diagonally and not horizontally across the TV screen.

Check the image quality and screen resolution:

There are various display types that you can pick from when purchasing a television. You can consider a plasma TV, LCD TV, LED TV and OLED display. Currently  LED televisions provide a better contrast ratio and are lighter as compared to LCDs. Lastly, OLED screens provides you good picture quality, sharpness and cinematic visuals, making them ideal for long hours of viewing.

Apart from this you should also consider the screen resolution. Choose from options like 320p, 480p, 720p, 1080HD, FULL HD,  4K UHD, True 4K, (8K) UHD and True 8K. While 320p–480p resolution provides you good colour quality and minimal pixelation, newer technologies like Full HD, 4K UHD and True 4K provide startling clarity and vibrant imagery.

If you can stretch your budget a bit then it is always recommended to buy Full HD 1080p TVs and not 720p HD Ready TVs. It is worthwhile to not take it for granted that all HD LED TV will offer Full HD 1080p resolution. Majority of the cheaper variants are 720p HD ready. If you have small room, it is always recommended to get a Full HD 1080p TV.

While 720p HD ready models could be a decent choice for those who are heavily dependent on set-top boxes but for people watching movies or playing games, a 1080p-HD resolution is a must.

Avoid ‘Cheap 4K’:

With 4K content very limited, buying a 4K TV makes very little sense for people who are mostly hooked to their set-top boxes. Also, if you really want to feel the difference in a 4K TV, it is advisable to save money and opt for an expensive models. Buying a cheap 4K TV for around Rs 50,000 might ruin the experience.

Check for connectivity and ports:

Wireless connectivity lets you do more with your TV so factor this in. Classic Bluetooth technology, and Miracast allow you to cast movies and other media from your handheld device or tablet on to the television wirelessly. Apart from this, check for other ports like the USB port, which lets you easily play media from a pen drive or a hard disk, Also check for 3.5mm audio jack and other AV ports for connecting audio speakers. Besides this, if the TV has an HDMI port, you will be able to play media directly from your laptop or tablet using an HDMI cable.

If you will use the TV for other purposes apart from connecting it to set-top boxes, be sure of the connectivity ports like HDMI, USB ports, 3.5mm audio jack and other AV ports. Also, having Bluetooth is an added advantage.

Weigh smart features:

Look to see if the television of your choice has smart features like an Android operating system and a touch screen. This will allow you to do more with your TV than just watch regular programming. For example, an Android operating system will help you download your favourite apps on to your TV. A smart TV will allow you to browse the internet too, thereby expanding the reach of what your TV is capable of doing.

Also, stay away from cheap Android TVs. With several of Intel PC-on- a-stick HDMI sticks for dirt cheap prices, it makes very little sense to buy an affordable Android TV. Don’t try to find the luxury of more features within a tight budget from brands unheard of, as the entire experience might end up becoming bitter.

Pick a TV with good audio quality and sound features:

Apart from picture quality, don’t forget to look into the audio quality. This will complement the vibrant visuals and complete your viewing experience. Pick a TV that offers a sound bar with surround sound or Dolby sound technology. Choosing a TV with a superior sound bar will make for a truly engrossing entertainment experience.

Select a model with good warranty:

Warranty terms vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. While some offer 1 year warranty, others provide 2 years of warranty with service. Pick a manufacturer that offers comprehensive domestic warranty that covers manufacturing defects, cost of repair, wear and tear, and even accidental damage.
